The Creative Electronics model 1091C 406/121.5 MHz Beacon Tester provides both an off-the-air field test, as well as a direct connection test, enabling power output measurements, along with an actual functional test of the beacon. It uses green/red LEDs to indicate an either pass or fail condition of the locator beacon being tested.

The tester measures power output, radiated field strength, frequency, modulation, transmitter stability, length of the transmission, the data clocking rate, the amount of un-modulation time, and recycling times.

It decodes the message, protocol being used, type of beacon, operating mode (normal or test), country of registration, the GPS data, if being sent, and the beacon’s identification. The tester incorporates a 4-line LCD display to show the test results, and if any discrepancies are encountered, a list of the discrepancies. Additionally, the results of each test are automatically stored in a non-volatile memory, which can be reviewed when the tests are completed.

Some of the other features include a self-test system that disables the tester if it is too hot or cold to be accurate, or if the battery gets too low. The display will indicate when this happens. The tester uses eight (8) AA batteries. Non-rechargeable Lithium batteries are recommended, and the tester will test approximately 50 beacons on a new set of batteries. If there is any inactivity for 15 minutes, the unit shuts down automatically to conserve battery life.
